ISA Certified Arborist

Call Michael J Swassing, ISA Certified Arborist, at (206)841-5954
A Natural Gardener is an owner-operated landscape service, primarily serving homeowners. We regularly serve King, Kitsap, and Pierce Counties, and will happily schedule consultations or projects throughout the entire Puget Sound region.

Working in harmony with nature rather than in opposition to nature, we don't use chemicals, and we do use Certified Organic products. We voluntarily comply with the "Organic Land Care Standard" published by the Society of Organic Urban Land Care Professionals. We don't top trees or do large tree takedowns. We do not charge to give bids for uncomplicated projects; however we do charge for consulting or design work. Our primary focus is to put our creative vision to work for you, with the benefit of our education and experience. Bringing that vision into reality often involves a lot of hard work.   We enjoy the entire creative process, including the follow-up care as the landscape matures.

Diana Esperas: Ecological Horticulturist, Native Plant Steward and Backyard Habitat Specialist
Diana Esperas is an organic and sustainable horticulturist who trained at the Lake Washington Tech program in Environmental Horticulture. She specializes in naturescaping for backyard wildlife habitat, and has volunteered as an Audubon Society Gardening for Life educator. She has deep wisdom and wide knowledge of northwest native plants: their uses in landscaping, taxonomy, ethnobotany, and general ecology.

Michael J. Swassing, ISA Certified Arborist
Michael J Swassing is an ISA Certified Arborist. He consults with clients about organic and sustainable land care, tree health and hazard evaluation, and tree preservation. He provides tree health care services, including the fine pruning of small and medium sized landscape trees and shrubs, fruit and nut trees, and specimen trees.  He also offers sustainable, naturalistic landscaping.

Michael graduated from WSU with a BS in Environmental Science in 1994. He then worked for King County Parks at Lake Wilderness. He views fine pruning as a healing art; a combination of tree surgery, woodworking, and the sculpture of the future growth. As an organic landscaper he specializes in naturalistic outdoor personal spaces and naturescaping for birds and wildlife. He can help homeowners establish backyard wildlife sanctuarys, parklike grounds, or formal estates.

ISA Certified Arborists are tree health care professionals.
Having exceeded the minimum qualifying requirements, Michael passed the exam to become an ISA Certified Arborist in the spring of 1998. Re-certification is required with the completion of thirty continuing education units for each three year term.

He has earned his fourth certification.

Continuing education units have focused on species and botanical family identification (taxonomy), tree anatomy and physiology, tree structural mechanics, landscape ecology, tree safety, and nutrient cycling. One especially interesting unit was on the physics of lightning.
